Course Description: During the semester, you will have regular lessons and will practice daily. At the beginning of the academic we will discuss your goals for the term and work towards them during the year. We will work on tone, technique, musicality, expression, vibrato, embellishments, style, performance practices, theory, stage presence, and flute maintenance. You will master one or more selections from the flute repertoire. At the end of the year, we'll evaluate your progress.

Lessons:  You are expected to come prepared to your lessons to play to the best of your ability the music assigned by me.  You are to arrive on time and already warmed up.  Please knock on the door to alert me when your lesson is supposed to begin.  I recommend that you have access to a metronome and tuner and that you take notes for yourself after each lesson.  You may call me “Mrs. Inglis” or “Adrienne.” I'm not a professor or doctor.

Notebook:  I recommend that you keep a notebook to write down what you're supposed to work on, questions you may have, etc.

Practicing:  Advanced students are expected to practice 2-4 hours per day; all others 1-2 hours per day.

Attendance: You are expected to be on time and present for all of your scheduled lessons. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CONTACT ME BY EMAIL OR PHONE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND YOUR LESSON.  Program my cell phone number into your phone so you can call or text message me.  I drive from central Austin to teach and appreciate your honoring our lesson time by treating it as the professional appointment that it is. If you do not come to a lesson and have not notified me by email at least 24 hours before the lesson or by home telephone by 7 a.m. the day of the lesson, you are not entitled to a make-up lesson or refund except under extraordinary circumstances.  If you notify me in advance, a make-up lesson may be scheduled at my convenience.  I will attempt to notify you by 7 a.m. the day of the lesson if I must cancel.  I reserve the right to change the regular schedule as long as alternate lesson times can be arranged.  If you are sick, please call me and do not come to your lesson.  You need your rest and I don't want to get sick.  Please take good care of yourself to avoid stress-related susceptibility to illnesses.  WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY TO AVOID GETTING SICK. Make-up lessons may not be in your usual lesson room.  Look for me (assertively!) or call me on my cell phone.

St. Stephen's Episcopal School
Course Syllabus for Applied Arts I—Flute Lessons
St. Stephen's Episcopal School   2009-10
Course Outline: This course will consist of one forty-five minute lesson per rotation, and requires a minimum of three hours per week of practice outside of class. Private lessons offered by the Fine Arts Department may be taken for one-half credit per year and may be used in partial fulfillment of the one credit Fine Arts graduation requirement. The course has no prerequisite, it may be repeated, and is offered to any student in grades 9-12.
Objectives:  At the beginning of the year the instructor and students will discuss the student's goals for the term and work towards them during the year. The student will work on tone, technique, musicality, expression, vibrato, embellishments, style, performance practices, theory, stage presence, and flute maintenance. The student will master one or more selections from the flute repertoire.
Evaluation:  Evaluation will be made on a credit/non-credit basis, with students earning an S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), or on very rare occasions, and H (Honors). Evaluation will be based on progress made each term, not on the degree of skill a student has at the beginning of the year. Students will play for a jury at the end of each of the three school-year terms. The jury will serve as the examination to determine each term grade. Grading will be based on the progress made and requirements fulfilled. To receive credit for the course, the student must practice, attend lessons, pass each jury (fall and spring terms only), participate in at least one studio or chamber music recital, and attend three live classical musical performances (one per term). The student will bring to the next lesson a concert program from each live classical musical performance and discuss the concert with the instructor.

Accompanists
:  If you expect to perform with piano (or other) accompaniment during the year, you should make arrangements as soon as possible with your accompanists.  It is extremely important for the accompanist to understand the level of difficulty of the music, the possible performance date(s), and the expected amount rehearsal time.  I will want to coach the ensemble, usually during a lesson, and coaching from other faculty is encouraged.  You should provide the music as soon as possible and make it very clear to your accompanists that they are expected to follow through on their commitment and perform to the best of their ability.  Backing out at the last minute or being unprepared to perform is not only unacceptable but also irresponsible and unprofessional.

The Care and Feeding of Your Flute:  If your flute needs work, call Alan Franklin at Strait Music in Austin.  The number is 1-512-476-6927 and Strait Music is located at 2428 W Ben White Blvd.  Strait Music also has a location in Round Rock.  To prevent problems, always swab out your flute after playing, taking care not to scratch the inside with metal.  Don't leave your cleaning cloth inside the case with the flute.  Always put your flute away so it doesn't collect dust.  Never leave expose it to extreme temperatures and keep it safe from theft.  Visit Strait Music online at http://www.straitmusic.com/.

Concerts:  I will try to inform you of flute concerts that I know about.  I encourage you and your friends and family to attend these events, even if you don't perform.

Sheet Music:  Students are expected to obtain original published versions of the musical works studied.  Photocopies may be used only on a temporary basis.  A reasonably good source for flute music is Flute World (http://fluteworld.com/) at (313) 855-0410, P.
